"The CD is unashamedly a selection of popular tunes - marches, slow airs, strathspeys, reels and jigs," said the band's pipe major, David Leckie, "because that's what this band is all about. Many of the tunes will be well known to those who hear the album and to those who have heard the band playing over the years."

Among those tunes is the title track itself, The Haddington Turnpike, which was written by Bruce Thomson and won the band's international competition in 2009 to find a 'pipe anthem' for East Lothian. It has gone on to become the signature tune for the band. Other tunes include Farewell to the Creeks, The Green Hills of Tyrol, Lochanside, Cock of the North, The Piper's Waltz, The Drunken Piper, Highland Cathedral, Kilworth Hills, and Scotland the Brave.

"The majority of the tracks are played by the band but on a few we have some guest musicians, all of whom are local," said David Leckie. "Accordionist Jim Wilson plays with the band on two tracks, including the beautiful Sarah's Song, written by Phil Cunningham; clarsach player Caitlin Bruce, who is also a drummer with the band, plays Itchy Fingers with band members Fraser Wilkinson on chanter and Gavin McDougall on djembe; and singer Coreen Scott performs Freedom Come All Ye, which was written by Hamish Henderson to the old pipe tune, 'The Bloody Fields of Flanders'.

"Producing this CD has been a wonderful and memorable thing for the band in our 30th anniversary year. As with our 2011 calendar and other initiatives, it is also aimed at raising much-needed funds so that we can continue to buy instruments and uniforms and run the band," concluded David Leckie.

"We are very grateful to everyone who has made the CD possible, most notably Ian Green and the fantastic team at Greentrax, whose support and expertise have been magnificent."
